Luke McMillan’s passion for music came about at a very young age, as he played the piano by ear at age seven and wrote music for his 7th grade band when he was twelve. He continued writing for ensembles that he played in through high school and college, and then eventually for the school where he teaches. People outside his circle began to take note of this deep-rooted passion and talent for playing and writing music, and they began hiring Luke for other projects ranging from small high school ensembles to college and professional groups.
Luke credits his unique style of writing music to looking at it with creativity from four different angles: making the music entertaining to the audience, pleasing to any judges that might be present, fun to play while still attainable for the players, and rehearsal efficient for the directors.
Luke teaches at Wylie High School in Abilene, Texas, where he conducts the high school jazz band, high school non-varsity concert band, and teaches beginner classes. Luke is a 2003 graduate of The University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Music. He played in the marching band, concert band and nationally recognized jazz lab bands while at North Texas.
Luke married his wife Emily on July 4th, 2009 in Abilene, Texas, where they currently reside. When he's not writing, teaching or playing music, he enjoys cooking, trying to stay as physically fit as possible, scouring the internet for mindless entertainment, reading informative and educational books, and driving around to look at historic homes and buildings.
